5 Reasons to get a Pet from your Local Animal Shelter March 23, 2016

1. Getting animals from your local shelter is just the right thing to do. So many animals are put to sleep every year because people would rather have pure breeds or baby animals. There are several cats, dogs, and other kinds of animals at the shelters that are in need of good homes. Shelters are not just for dogs and cats. Most local shelters will have rabbits, reptiles, and birds as well as other animals in need of new homes.

2. Pet stores and breeders are a huge problem and you are more likely to get an unhealthy animal from them. There are too many pets in the world that need good homes to be getting them from breeders or pet stores that are just trying to make money off of them by over breeding or buying and selling animals. That is not the best road to take. Pure breeds have more health problems. If you are looking for a healthy animal, just go find one at your local animal shelter that is already grown and been checked out. It is the easiest way to make sure you are not going to be paying for expensive veterinary bills in the future.

3. So you want a dog but don’t have time for all of that house training that goes along with it? There are plenty of grown but still younger animals at the local shelters in need of a home that are already house broken. Just take them home and get them used to your schedule and house. Most dogs that are housebroken will not have a problem adjusting to a new home. They will also be super appreciative of the second chance at life.

4. You will be changing a living and breathing creatures life. Shelter animals are normally the best ones to get because they are so happy to be going home with you. There are a lot of loving cats and dogs just waiting for someone to pick them up and take them home to a loving place. Forever homes mean their whole life. It is a precious way of giving back to the animals and to humanity by saying no to puppy mills and pet stores and yes to the welfare of these wonderful animals.

5. Adopting from an animal shelter will give you a great sense of pride when you bring your new pet home. You will really feel like you have made a difference in the world and helped. You certainly will be for that animal. It also sets an example for friends and family. When they see what an awesome pet you have gotten from the animal shelter, they might just decide to do the exact same thing!
